 medical coding refers to medical coder keeps the patients health records accurate to the healthcare providers and to the insurance companies. for doing that, they need to rely on world health organization's international classification of diseases or simply called as ICD.


ICD was the system that classifies and codes all diagnosis, symptoms and the procedures. medical coding professionals  must go through knowledge in three code sets that are currently in use. 

  1. current procedure terminology(cpt)
  2. ICD-10-CM
  3. healthcare common procedures coding system(HCPCS)

ICD-10-CM; which refers to the 10th revision coding system, that was the procedural classification system of medical codes. it is used in hospital settings to report inpatient procedures.
HCPCS; it is primarily used for billing and identifying items and services, and these are include in physician based services such as ambulance services and prosthetic devices.

ICD procedures coding system is used by hospital facilities. it works under the act of health insurance portability and accountability act(HIPAA). using for tracking healthcare statistics, disease burden, mortality statistics and billing and soon.
ICD -10-cm is a seven character alphanumeric codes, each code is begin with a letter and follows two numbers.
ICD codes are important because it provides a common language for reporting and monitoring diseases.
when you train these coding things, no one will become a coder soon, like every trains, coding is not much easy need to work hard. but chances of our carrier were high. continues education and training makes a person biller and coder.
